We Are Thomasse

We Are Thomasse (rhymes with “sassy”), is an NYC based sketch team made up of married couple Nick Afka Thomas (the Brit) and Sarah Ann Masse (the American). They have been compared to Monty Python on the one hand, Nichols & May on the other, and Key & Peele on that always useful third hand. They combine the best of British and American awesomeness by presenting witty, fast- paced, character-driven sketches that are modern but with a classy, classic twist.

We Are Thomasse: As American As Fish ‘n’ Chips, features a dizzyingly funny and fresh series of sketches full of sharp wit and expert costume changes, covering everything from empathetic muggers to the Proper Way to Have Sex.

“We Are Thomasse delivers a rapid fire series of characters and scenarios that keep you laughing and engaged from beginning to end.” Brendan McMorrow, Producer at Above Average.

“We Are Thomasse is a funny, smart, and well-paced show. Sarah and Nick are efficient writers and actors: the sketches are tightly scripted, every line is meaningful, and no time is wasted. They keep things grounded while being silly – or keep things silly while being grounded? Either way, the show was a breath of fresh air in the world of sketch comedy. Keep your eyes on these two.” Ari Scott, Writer/Performer/Director, UCB

We Are Thomasse performs original sketch shows every month at The PIT and The Treehouse Theater in NYC. They also perform regularly at iO West in Los Angeles and have performed at national festivals such as The NYC Sketch Festival, The NC Comedy Arts Festival, and The LA Scripted Comedy Festival. Their 13-episode web-series, S’N’M, is being released soon!

Sarah Ann Masse is the face of new campaign for “& A Lady”

I just wrapped on a short, silent film that is going to be used for the campaign for the new project by Stefanie Bartz called “& A Lady” which is an online digital platform for young entrepreneurial women in order to promote the exchange of ideas, collaboration and mentorship. In Stefanie’s words here is what “& A Lady” is all about.

“& A Lady started as my Senior Capstone project for the University of Washington Design Program. It was originally focused almost entirely on the mentorship aspect; a way of pairing creative professionals and emerging designers similar to that of online dating, but on a professional level. The issue is incredibly complex, so the solution had to become more comprehensive. I broke it down into three main resources: inspiration, connection and advice from those in the field. The mentorship program is to be implemented later on, when more people are involved.”

I can’t wait to see the final project and share it all with you!

The reviews are in for “We Are Thomasse” at the NYC Sketch Festival!

Nick and I had the immense pleasure of performing for a packed house last week at The People’s Improv Theatre here in NYC as a part of The New York City Sketch Festival. We did 10 sketches in 23 minutes and got a hugely positive response form the crowd. I thought I’d share some of those reviews with you here so you can bask in the utter, giddy, joy with me!

“We Are Thomasse delivered a set that was intelligent and sweet with more than enough surprises to keep me  laughing and wanting more. A sophisticated set that never took itself too seriously.” – Aubrey Kyburz, improviser and comedian

“I didn’t think I could grin so much from short-form, rapid-fire sketch comedy – but I’m pretty certain that just a half hour delighting with the British-American combo of We Are Thomasse left my face just a bit more wrinkled from laughing and smiling throughout. It’s rare that you get to see such chemistry in a comedy duo, and it’s made all the more exciting by smart, sharp, humble writing – writing that’s clever without making a show of its cleverness, and executed with just the right pacing and gusto. I went into We Are Thomasse’s show having been kind of down, and left having been entertained enough to buoy me for days to come. Kudos to them – may they continue to delight audiences from bigger and bigger stages!”- Rob Berliner, audience member NYC Sketch Fest 2014

“We are Thomasse was hands down the best sketch team I saw at NYC Sketch Fest 2014. The writing was so tight and polished. It’s traditional comedic theatre with a modern twist. I can’t wait to see them again.”- Jerry Emeka, Producer, Old School Sketch Show and Secret Formula Productions

“We Are Thomasse delivers a rapid fire series of characters and scenarios that keep you laughing and engaged from beginning to end.”- Brendan McMorrow, Producer, Above Average.

“From the moment the lights went up to the final blackout, I had a smile on my face.  Numerous times I thought to myself ‘This is right out of Flying Circus’.” Keith Panzarella

Sarah Ann Masse performs in “You Are Not Alone: An Uplifting Show About Depression” at The Magnet Theatre in honor of Robin Williams on Monday September 8th.

I am honored to announce that I have been asked (along with my wonderful husband) to take part in this very special show. It will be an evening of learning how to laugh at the very real struggle of mental illness. Four essayists with share stories about their experience with mental illness and 16 improvisers will create amusing scenes based off of those stories. Mental health and mental illness are very serious issues that face all of us in our daily life. It is time that we remove the stigma and start talking about it. I am proud to do my small bit to help bring this about. Information about the show and how to get tickets below.

Sarah Ann Masse and writing partner/husband, Nick Afka Thomas begin Sketch 101 taught by Kerry McGuire at UCB!

sketchy

A few weeks ago, Nick and I decided to sign up for the first level of sketch writing classes at UCB. We loved training there as improvisers and can’t wait to see what their sketch program is like. As you probably know, Nick and I have been writing and performing sketch for years together now, but we thought it would be fun and useful to enroll in a writing class together. We’d also love the chance to write for a UCB house team (aka a Maude Team) at some point in the future and completing their sketch program is the first step. This should be a lot of fun and I love that I will be REQUIRED to write a new sketch every week!

I am delighted to be back in NYC and doing some make em ups with my favorite team, Macwood Fleet. Come out to The Triple Crown basement tomorrow at 11pm. It’ll be funny and free! Hooray!

Whoa! Heather McDonald herself watched The Girl Who Cried First Trimester!

And she liked it!!! For those of you who don’t know, this short film was totally inspired by a story Heather wrote called “The Girl Who Cried First Trimester” in the book “Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me”. Heather is a huge inspiration and I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am! Follow her on twitter @HeatherMcDonald

Sarah Ann Masse stars as the quirky, enthusiastic lead of this hysterical short film, The Girl Who Cried First Trimester!

sarah ann masse as heather mcdonald

A few months ago I worked on a film inspired by the book “Lies Chelsea Handler Told Me”. The very talented Austin James Nunes spotted me as I was auditioning for a different film and scooped me up to star in his project right away. I got to play Heather McDonald opposite the lovely Chelsea Gidden as Chelsea Handler. And, if you look closely, you will see my handsome husband, Nick Afka Thomas as well. This was such a great shoot and I am really happy with the outcome.  It is finally up on youtube so please, enjoy!

A still from short film “The Girl Who Cried First Trimester”

sarah ann masse as heather mcdonald

Above is a still from the hysterical short film I starred in called “The Girl Who Cried First Trimester” based on a story from Chelsea Handler’s book “Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me”. It is based on a true story from Heather McDonald (whom I portray in the film) and Chelsea Handler’s life and it is so so funny. Austin Nunes did an excellent job of adapting it for the screen AND directing it. I have seen a rough cut and I can’t WAIT to share it with all of you!

Great press for Sarah Ann Masse’s portrayal of Lady Macbeth at the All Hallows Eve fundraiser for The Valley Shakespeare Festival!

The Valley Shakespeare Festival asked Nick and I to return for a fundraiser in the week leading up to Halloween. It was a great evening of food, fundraising and theatre. I am particularly proud of my work as Lady Macbeth in the famous sleep walking scene which was called “deeply affecting”. I can’t wait to work with all these crazy kids again!

Sarah Ann Masse is officially an audiobook narrator with the release of Random Scribbles Vol 1 and Random Scribbles Vol 2!

I had the pleasure of recording the narration for two very moving volumes of poetry by author April Margeson.  She covers topics from love, loss, parenthood, hate, despair, hope, faith, revenge, abusive relationships and everything in between. It was truly a blessing to be asked to do these books and I look forward to  many more collaborations with April soon!

I have had the pleasure of being photographed by my friend Xanthe Elbrick many times. Not only is she a brilliant photographer but she is a Tony nominated actress so she knows how it feels on btoh sides of the lens. She makes you feel so comfortable and the results are awesome. I am particularly pleased with this last set. I have only posted about 30 shots but I had no less than 100 great ones to choose from. What a great problem to have!

The folks loved “The Comedy of Errors’ featuring Sarah Ann Masse’s gutsy, Brooklyn accented, married nun!

sarah ann masse and moe tache aka jamie arabalos are aemelia and angelo in the comedy of errors

It’s true… I smoked a cigar, I had a thick Brooklyn accent, I ran the town and apparently I was a big audience hit. Having all the kids come up to me after asking for my autograph was a real treat! I LOVE bringing Shakespeare to new audiences… especially kids. We had a great run and are so thankful to the community in Shelton, CT and the surrounding towns for showing so much support!

Shakespeare called and Sarah answered!

For any of you who have been following my career, you will know that Shakespeare is one of my first loves.

After a hiatus of a few years (except for a reading here or there) I will be returning as Aemelia, The Abbess in “The Comedy of Errors” as a part of The Valley Shakespeare Festival’s Inaugural Season. The extra good news is that handsome british devil, Nick Afka Thomas, (aka my husband) will be joining me in this production helmed by Tom Simonetti. The Comedy of Errors also pairs me back up with old friend Kristin Kingsley. What a treat this will be!

A new sketch and a new role for Sarah Ann Masse: President of the United States of America!

When I was a little girl I wanted to be three things… a ballerina (I did ballet for 14 years), a lawyer (I didn’t go to law school but I am a killer when it comes to winning an argument), and the first woman President of the United States. Well, I have finally (sort of) achieved that last one! In the latest sketch written by We Are Thomasse (that is me and Nick) for Sketch 13 called “Make Poverty History” you get a peek into what it’s REALLY like in the Presidential break room.

May 21st, 2013

Sarah Ann Masse’s improv team, Macwood Fleet, had a really fun set and now we want you to watch it!

Last week our friends on Tall Boys asked us to perform. It was a great night with funny sets from Tall Boys, Gentle Touch and us, Macwood Fleet. Some are saying it’s one of our funniest sets to date. The suggestion was infection and the result was a bit of itching, a lot of one upmanship, and a drone or two. Enjoy!

Sarah Ann Masse and Macwood Fleet did improv at a show hosted by Curtains and it was captured on video!

On April 26th Macwood Fleet got to perform alongside some improv greats, Curtains, Galahad, and Fancy. It was so so so much fun. Lucky for you, you can join in on the fun and watch a set in which a boy has anxiety about wearing doublet and hose, may or may not be in an abusive relationship and is also on a very unconventional baseball team. Enjoy!

sarah ann masse on the onion news empire
Yep. that’s me, Sarah Ann Masse, right next to Cheyenne Jackson.

As you may know, a few months ago I shot a pilot for Amazon Studios,  a newsroom sitcom from those geniuses at The Onion. I was working background so I had no idea how much I would be seen but sure enough, a few days ago, messages started streaming in from friends congratulating me on my screen time in the pilot. If you watch the pilot and/or the trailer you will see my silly face very clearly in a few scenes and boy oh boy is it exciting! Here is hoping it gets picked up and they call me in to work core. Actually YOUR feedback can help decide which pilots get picked up, so, be sure to leave share your thoughts on the website! Fingers crossed!

Sarah Ann Masse and Nick Afka Thomas get accepted into UCB’s advanced study program AND prepare to audition for house teams!

Upright Citizens Brigade sarah ann masse and nick afka thomas advanced study harold lloyd audition

A few weeks ago, Nick and I found out that we were accepted into the advanced study program at The Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre. Think of it as grad school for improv. Getting accepted is quite competitive so we are really honored and excited to continue our training and performance with the geniuses at UCB.

The second exciting element to this is that being in the Advanced Study Program qualifies us to be able to audition for the Harold and Lloyd House improv teams at the theatre. Getting on to one of these is a big goal for most improvisers and it means getting to perform with top quality talent once a week at UCB.  There will be close to 500 people auditioning so the chances of getting on to a team (there are probably only 8-12 slots open at the moment) are slim we are still thrilled to get our first shot at trying out.

Wish us luck!

Sarah Ann Masse has another improv video to share with you!

A few days ago Macwood Fleet had the chance to perform at Under St Mark’s Theatre in a show hosted by The Upstarts and we were clever enough to record our set. In it, I play a wealthy woman who has an unreasonable fear of exotic animals. This proves to be quite inconvenient since her son has recently become a camel rider. Find out why by watching here!

sarah ann masse and macwood fleet win the brick's improv madness round 1

On a sort of, almost warm night in late March the members of Macwood Fleet ventured to The Brick Theatre in Williamsburg for an improv showdown of epic proportions. We did a 20 minute set in our signature style, The Spokane and kicked some booty. We went up against a fine foe called  Fantastick Gary. They were four funny guys and they fought hard but the fates and the audience were on Macwood Fleet’s side and we ended the night victorious! We are so excited and will be getting our next performance date soon. I will keep you updated on our progress! YAY!

Sarah Ann Masse and your wild card team, Regional boxes, make history by winning their second UCB Indie Cage Match in a row!

Regional Boxes Your Wild Card Team

Regional boxes: YOUR wild card team did it again… on St. Patrick’s Day we headed to our second match at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, East Village and faced two competing teams and and once again, WE WON! It was truly phenomenal. This second win meant that on march 24th we got to compete one final time. The stakes were high, if we won, we would get a trophy and a chance to move on the the main stage cage match at UCB Chelsea. If we lost, we would still go down in history as the ONLY wild card team to win any Indie Cage Match battles (let alone two) ever in this history of Indie Cage Match! Regional Boxes took the stage and played hard. We followed the fun and supported each other like crazy. We were so happy with our set but, alas, another team took the night and our magical journey at the Indie Cage match ended. But, what a glorious journey it was. Six strangers took the stage, banded together, made magic and won. Things like this don’t happen very often and I feel blessed to have been a part of it.

Sarah Ann Masse gets selected for wild card team at UCB’s Indie Cage match, and WINS!!!

Sarah Ann Masse wins Indie Cage Match at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre East

After a very good 401 class show at UCB east last night, in what can only be described as fate and magic, I was selected to perform as part of a wild card team at Indie Cage Match. Six strangers (except for my class mate Jake Keefe) entered the stage as Regional Boxes and by the end of the night were voted WINNER by the audience and panel of judges. From what I understand, a wild card team winning the prestigious Indie Cage Match is unprecedented. I got blessed with a great team of high energy performers who know how to listen and I got to perform in front of my very first improv teacher (who is one of the co-hosts of the match) Ryan Karels. I am so proud and so excited!

Sarah Ann Masse and Nick Afka Thomas are head writers!

Nick and I are very pleased to announce that we have been asked to be a part of a very exciting project put together by Art Effects Theatre Company and Mozzlestead Productions. Our dear friend Montserrat Mendez, aka Mozz,  of Mozzlestead Productions, asked us to apply to participate in this new venture. Seven head writers (Nick and I count as one since we are a team) have been put together with some writer/actors to develop a short film.  All of the shorts will be shot this Spring after which the seven head writers will work with show-runner Mozz, to create an entire episodic web series. This is a great chance for me and Nick to work in a writers room and simulate the episodic TV writing experience. We will update you as this exciting project develops!

Sarah Ann Masse The Onion News Network. The Onion Presents: The News
Sarah and Nick on set of The Onion Presents: The News

Yesterday, I spent the day on set of The Onion’s new television pilot, The Onion Presents: The News which is being produced by Amazon Studios for LOVEFiLM. 11 pilots will be shot by Amazon Studios for LOVEFiLM and the episodes will be streamed to viewers in the UK and Germany. Based partially on viewer feedback Amazon Studios will pick up some of the pilots for full production.

Thanks to casting director Barbara McNamara, my husband Nick, was cast as an editor and I was cast as a a producer. It was a great set to work background on and the cast and crew were both fun and professional. The hubby and I are very much hoping that the series gets picked up and that we are added to the “bullpen” core cast!

Hi-lights of the day on set included meeting one of our comedy icons, Jeffrey Tambor. And, for me, getting to have a scene that featured a nice bit of one on one acting between me and Cheyenne Jackson.

Stay tuned for more news on this great project!
